Haruko Crow Nishimura
In this conversation, faculty organizers Paul Kikuchi and Amiko Matsuo, along with student Felix Bosques, chat with Haruko Crow Nishimura about her work as a dancer, vocalist, and co-director of the Degenerate Art Ensemble, which makes work inspired by punk, comics, cinema, protest, nightmares, and fairy tales, driven by the power of live music and their own style of visceral movement theater and dance. Nishimura discusses how she excavates the dark corners of humanity, inventing new mythologies and reimagining fairy tales, telling stories that strive to reveal hidden beauty, confront demons, and ultimately find healing.

Steven MillerHARUKO CROW NISHIMURA is a dancer, vocalist and co-director of Degenerate Art Ensemble (DAE). She is always searching to discover how art can create deeper connections and awakenings. Her unique style of movement is inspired by her practices of physical theater and butoh dance. She excavates the dark corners of humanity, inventing new mythologies and reimagining fairy tales, telling stories that strive to reveal hidden beauty, confront demons, and ultimately find healing.
She is a recipient of Arts Innovators Award from Artist Trust, a Creative Capital award, is a Guggenheim fellow, received a commission with her group DAE from director Robert Wilson to re-interpret his work Einstein on the Beach ( NY ), created a solo dance with Kronos Quartet at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for legendary dancer Anna Halprin’s 95 Rituals ( SF ) and a large scale site specific collaboration with Olson Kundig Architects ( Seattle ). She has performed her dance work throughout the US and Europe. Her newest work Skeleton Flower premiered at the SPOTLIGHT USA dance festival ( Bulgaria ) presented by American Dance Abroad and will appear in the 2021 International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Mexico City. Skeleton Flower will have its New York premiere in the Fall of 2021.

Student Bio
Felix Bosques Harima is a musician and South Seattle College student of Japanese and Puerto Rican ancestry. He has been self-taught with the guitar for over 11 years, and has a musical focus ranging from acoustic fingerstyle to heavy metal. Felix is studying for a degree in the business field so that he can have the knowledge and experience to one day start-up a record label focusing on the musical and creative development of the underserved youth in the community.
